Volunteering abroad changed my life

I spent 3 months living with a Tanzanian family working in a group of 16 volunteers in a rural village called Mpangala on the Raleigh International ICS WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) programme to educate and promote the importance of good hygiene and sanitation practice within the community. We did loads of action day events, focus groups and surveys during our primary project; set up a SWASH club and Environmental club at the local primary school; and for our secondary project we built 3 taps, a large rocket stove, a water storage unit for boiled safe drinking water, revived the school kitchen garden to introduce new vegetables to the school diet and improve the childrens' nutrition, and installed 10 permanent tippy taps around the school grounds. I worked on two large educational painted murals on the walls of the school; one on washing your hands after the toilet and the other on looking after your environment. It was a mind blowing experience which has opened my eyes to global issues and has made me realise how fortunate we are to have safe sanitation practice in the UK. Thank you to everyone who sent me a fundraising donation for Raleigh before my departure 3 months ago - with your help I was able to complete this important work with my group (Charlie 1, 15z) and bring gradual change to water, sanitation and hygiene practice in this part of Tanzania.
